4 errors. Coming back
against Felix Hernandez and then blowing it. A's fans booing Milton
Bradley and Eric Byrnes. The guy sitting in front of us who was passed out drunk in
his seat by the middle of the 4th inning. The parking lot that looked post-apocalyptic. Waiting in line for the
delicious sounding pork sliders, only to be told that they were unavailable
because they were still frozen. Getting our magnetic schedules and then realizing that the magnets are lower quality than in years past. We are happy that baseball is back, we
really are. And nothing (not a cross country flight or a tiny baby)
could have kept us away from the Coliseum last night. But we have to
say, things felt pretty shabby. Here's hoping the A's
straighten things out and beat the Mariners tonight.
Go A's!
p.s. One highlight was that Stomper was wearing a suit and tie. Our only concern is that if Stomper isn't in uniform, what happens if the A's need him to pinch run?
Stomper is looking like a cross between Charlie Finley and Babar the Elephant...at least his suit was in a becoming shade of green.
On Opening Night, the atmosphere on the too-cramped concourses of our beloved town-hole of a baseball stadium had that Raiders-ish, vaguely menacing, drunken 19-year olds lunging and screaming vibe. One positive was that the majority of fans were donning A's gear. These people didn't look like casual fans, but then they don't seem to show up except for Opening Night and maybe a Red Sox/Yanks/Giants game. Therein lies the problem with A's home games...uncomfortably crowded when we get a near-sell out, and then depressingly empty when 7,000 people show up for an announced crowd of 10K. I was impressed that the crowd roared after 5 innings of lifeless baseball. Booing Milton seemed unjust, but it worked. I've never seen a player make hand gestures to the crowd, in the middle of an inning, while getting booed! Also, why freak out after making the final out of an inning in which your team takes the lead? He was great in '06, and didn't want to leave, so I'm never gonna boo him in Oakland.
Also, they pulled the fish sandwiches from the Red Hook ale booth for philly cheesesteaks! I hope they still have french fries in a helmet and chili fries. I have no idea what to eat there anymore. Kinder's BBQ? So sad.
Braden K'd 10 yesterday, numbed out foot and all. Kouz partially redeemed himself after single-handedly losing the opner for us. We're at .500, and I like it!
