Shutting out the Yankees was awesome. Losing to the Yankees was terrible. Listening to the game on the radio was terrible because the cheers whenever something good happens for the Yankees are as loud (if not louder) than when something good happens for the A's. Watching the game on tv was awesome because Fosse talked about Dibs and ballpark food for like 10 minutes. Seeing all the Yankee fans in Oakland makes us wonder where they all came from and what percentage of them have ever set foot in the Bronx. But seeing all the A's fans in attendance reminds us that A's fans are loyal and proud and quirky and awesome and so we kind of feel sorry for people who'd prefer to just jump on the $250 million bandwagon. Listening to Nick Swisher tell Marty Lurie how much he loooooves being a Yankee made us want to vomit. But listening to all the gracious things he had to say about his time in Oakland reminded us what a delightful A he was. We still hate A-Rod. And Jeter. But we still love Swisher and CC. We hate that the A's had so many errors. We love that the Kurt Suzuki revenge homerun is a real thing now. Can you understand our ambivalence?
Go Oakland!
I sat in Section 105 last night, surrounded by Yankees fans. I know that I was in the "visitor's side" of the ballpark, but it seemed like well over 50% of those in attendance were rooting for the Yankees. After one particularly loud pro-Yankees roar, I turned to my buddy and almost said, "it's like rooting for General Motors," but then I realized that GM is in the crapper nowadays. I need to update my corporate analogy. Maybe I'll say "rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for Whole Foods/Wal Mart/Exxon?"
I will say this: I prefer Yankees fans over Red Sox fans, who are much more irritating and band-wagonny looking than typical Yankees fans. On the whole, these shlubs last night look look like they've been rooting or the Stankees for a while (Paul O'Neill jerseys, fat guys with old weathered Yankee t-shirts, etc...). I was shocked that even with CC on the mound, only 25K people showed up. This depressed me as much as the 3 A's errors and desultory offensive effort.
Much like the economy, the A's will rise again in 2010 (or 2011). Also, with Braden hurt, we gotta sign Mulder and go with the six-man rotation. If we can make room for the great Brett Tomko, surely we can squeeze in my boy.
