Rickey Henderson is crazy. But we love that he got into the Hall of Fame today. We hope his speech is just completely bonkers. And to the 28 joes who left him off their ballots, like seriously?

RIGHT!? What kind of fool would try to deny Rickey the HOF? Honestly!
On a Rickey note, we just got the MLB channel at my house and my mom turned it on today and it was the A's vs. Blue Jays in the ALCS a while ago, but they didn't say the year. I was so excited to get to see all these old great players, but all I saw was Eckersley give up a run, Jose Canseco pop out and Ricky get picked off. The A's did win and I did get to see Eck's fist pump, but it was a thoroughly disappointing experience. Hendu got a walk, though! Woot?

There's senility and then there's hate. Preposterous. Revoke their ability to vote!

Ahhh Rickey, way back in 1991, when I was just a spring chicken, I had the honor of being in attendance when Mr. Henderson brook Lou Brock's stolen base record. We were on the Oakland side of the stadium way upstairs when Rickey took off towards us from second, man that guy could run. I am not sure what was worse after that, Rickey's speech, or Nolan's 7th no-no.

There was nothing at all wrong with Rickey's speech. So Nolan's no-no must have been worse. Glad I could clear that up.

I understand Rickey's a fan of Ali, but to quote "greatest of all time"??? Thanks for clearing that up.

Rickey was the greatest base thief of all time. Any questions?

There are no questions about Rickey's base running prowess, his hustle, his flash, or his ability to change any game he was in. I simply posted a memory I had of childhood when Rickey brook Lou's record. In fact, I think he was much much more then a base stealing threat. We're talking power, OBP, even a respectable lifetime BA of .279. Maybe the "O-Bro's" didn't hear the speech. Nothing was said about the greatest "base thief" of all time, nor was mentioned any other qualifier, like "greatest baseball player", nope, he simply said "now I am the greatest of all time." Perhaps its just me, but I took that, even in my 15 year old mind, to be a little over the top. I love the way Rickey played the game, he was one of my childhood heroes, and I am thrilled to see him get the validation of first ballot enshrinement.

I think everyone, (and that includes Rickey himself), has been a little too harsh in their criticism of his speech afterward. I recall Lou Brock's speech (God, I wish I had a transcript of that one!) that same day on the field to be just as cringe-worthy as Rickey's. I recall him comparing Rickey to Socrates (?!?!?) Sure, Socrates had a good eye, but a terrible first step when taking off for second.

Yeah, and luckily, Rickey was smart enough to avoid the hemlock.

According to the unassailable accuracy of Wikipedia, Rickey's words were:
"...Lou Brock was the symbol of great base stealing. But today, I'm the greatest of all time. Thank you."

What's wrong with saying that?
