Who would have thought? We really resented him when he left Oakland for the Yankees -- not just that he left but how he left -- and we've booed him just as loudly as everyone else at the Coliseum for the past several years. And we are happy that he never won a World Series with those horrible Yankees. But since all the steroid hub-bub, he has become sort of a sympathetic and therefore more likeable figure. And there was something kind of A's-ey about that mustache he rocked last season. So we welcome Jason Giambi back to the A's because it somehow feels right...and also because of his left-handed pop.
My pop was right-handed.

Call me sentimental, but I'm happy with this move. 30+ HR and 100+ RBI for $5M is a bargain, and I interpret Giambi taking the opportunity to return for cheap as a sign of remorse/good-will. Now, we have TWO recognizable players!! Man, I think I booed Giambi more lustily than any other visiting player over the last seven years. At least I'll save my lungs some strain in '09. BTW, I am shocked that seven full years have passed since Giambi left Oakland...those 2001 playoffs are still so vivid...Posada's homer off Zito, the f***n flip, Dye breaking his leg, Giambi chewing out Tejada on the bases in Yankee Stadium. Maybe a productive 2009 will help ease the pain of those memories. Welcome home, and by all means, please keep taking whatever you are taking!!!

I just love that he looks like he's going to cry in the press photo on the A's website. He's so happy!

Dear Billy,
Go get Abreu. Sign Cabrera. Trade Barton to the Nats (although they seem to have nothing to give us). Trade Crosby, Duke, Buck, and a prospect not named Anderson or Cahill to the Pads to get Peavy. And, what the heck, let's sign Ben Sheets too. Then we can have the Angels quaking in their boots.
That is all

I'm glad he's back. Mostly for sentimental reasons, but if he has a good year too that will be awesome.

Even if Giambi puts up say 20/80/.250, that would be a huge upgrade from last year's Barton/Thomas combination. Welcome back, Jason! I guess the marketing department will have to schedule a "Jason Giambi Thong Day" now. I wonder how much that will fetch on EBay.
