Dear A's Organization,
So here we are. The A's have been officially eliminated from the
playoffs and the best we can hope for is an above .500 finish. It's
been a tough season. So tough that we haven't even felt like posting
to our own blog. And we used to LOVE posting on this blog. But we
have looked deep into our hearts. And we can tell you that the problem
for us is not the losing. We are not fair-weather fans, we haven't
stopped watching, and reading obsessively about the A's. And we
certainly still love the A's as much as ever. The problem isn't being
out of the pennant race by double digits in June. It isn't even that
it felt like the A's never really had a chance. The problem is that
every time we look at our beloved refrigerator magnets, we see Milton
Bradley who was traded way back when the A's still had a chance with a
lot of talk about being injury prone, while the guys who epitomize
injury proneness like Rich Harden, Eric Chavez and Bobby Crosy are
still around and not helping the team at all. The problem is Adam
Melhuse, not the guy but your approach to the guy. We love ourselves
some Melhuse, but really, to trade him away and then get him back just
seems haphazard and makes you look dumb. The problem is that Mike
Piazza, for all of his graciousness and professionalism, has about 1%
of the sparkle and pizazz of Frank Thomas. The problem is that, over
the course of the season, it got really frigging old hearing Bob Geren
keep saying everything was good when it was actually bad. The problem
is that Stomper is not the same guy and Stomper's friend is not the
same guy and the new Stomper and friend do standard dopey mascot antics
instead of awesome Oaklandy dancing. The problem is that you have an
incredibly irritating policy that won't let season ticket holders trade
tickets in for fireworks games even though the A's have been
mathematically eliminated and there is certain to be loads of empty
seats and/or seats occupied by Angels fans that could have been
occupied by us if you'd cooperated and let us trade in our tickets.
The problem is that, and we really hate to say this, but it seems like
even Nick Swisher isn't having that much fun -- although charging the
mound was a season highlight. When you really get down to it, dear A's
Organization, the reason we have not felt like posting on our blog is
that somehow you've taken all the fun out of it. We understand that
we've been lucky to enjoy all the recent years of winning streaks and
pennant races and playoff baseball. We get that the A's are not the
Yankees and that's a huge reason we love the A's. But we also really
think that you have a responsibility to your fans to keep things fun.
And we just want you to know, dear A's Organization, that we feel that
you've let us down in that department lately.
Your friends,
Oakland A's Days
